September is gag grouper season on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
For 2026, the season is open from September 1 through September 30. That gives anglers a short window to target one of Florida’s hardest-fighting fish.
The good news is there are many ways to catch them. You can cast plugs in shallow water, troll over rock piles or drop live bait offshore.
No matter how you fish, you need strong gear. A gag grouper’s first move after getting hooked is usually straight back toward the rocks.
Start With a Strong Setup

You want the lure swimming just above the structure.

If the fish stop biting, move to the next spot.
